VA-NC trip--Thursday May 17, Rockingham County visit

Ancient house on Whetstone Creek area in Rockingham County, NC.  It was built about 1800 by Michael Thomas, a possible distant relative of ours.

2nd old house of the Thomas family, located in Irving Road, off Whetstone Creek Road.  Older part was built about 1860 by members of Thomas family.

Whetstone Creek is tiny, where the Whetstone Creek Road crosses it.

Abandoned graves at former site of a church, Wesley Chapel.  That church was constructed in 1826, redone in 1880, then sold to another church group and moved from this site.

Jettie May Sands married George Washington Lewis, son of John Franklin Lewis (md Susan Francis Dodson), son of Powhatton Green Lewis (md Molly A. "Polly" Barnes), son of John Lewis Jr. (md Sarah Lewis), son of John Penn Lewis (md Elizabeth Sams), son of William Langston Lewis      SOURCE: The Lewis Family, vol. 1

Sarah Thomas "Sally" Lewis, died unmarried.  She was the daughter of John Fields Lewis (md Nancy Ann Barnes), son of Robert Pinckney Lewis (md Rebecca Thomas), son of William Langston Lewis.  Joseph Henry Pratt was the only son of James R. Pratt and Ruth Jane Lewis (sister of Sally), so also was descended from William Langston Lewis, and was a nephew of Sally.  His father died in the Civil War and Sally and Ruth Jane lived together, with Joseph. Sally continued to live with her nephew the remainder of her life, even after Ruth Jane died (1889) and also after he married a young wife, Essie Barker, at age 56, in 1919.  He died 20 Jun 1935, 4 years after his Aunt Sally, and leaving a wife and 3 children. 

VA-NC trip--sightseeing, Hollywood Cemetery

The Hollywood Cemetery is an old cemetery in Richmnd VA, located on a bluff overlooking the James River.  Its name seems to have nothing to do the movie place.  It contains graves for two US Presidents, CSA President Jefferson Davis, and other prominent persons, and also a lot of confederate soldier graves including many men killed at the battle of Gettysburg.

Draper Temple with Krysta and Nathan

We had a delightful experience last Saturday being at the Draper Temple with Krysta as she received her endowments.  Pictured are Krysta with Nathan G. and his parents, Daryl and Shanna.  Beautiful place and lovely people!  Also there were Angela and Bruce, Katrina, and Camille, and Wendy, of course, but the Stanfords escaped before we decided on pictures.

After the temple we all went to Angela's and Bruce's for good sandwiches and ice cream.

Congratulations to Jamison

Congratulations to Jamison, who on April 18, 2018, continued the perfect record of my male descendants in achieving the Eagle rank in Scouting.  Like the others, I don't think that this is a pro forma achievement, but represents a true Eagle in his heart and character.
